Thanks to Dr. Ituriano, the new director at the main healthcare center in La Ceiba, the doors are finally open for Silvia to provide childbirth education. Local nurses, trained by her, now give a crash course to the expecting mothers in the waiting room. This quick talk covers basic anatomy, techniques to help with pain, and is an opportunity to answer any questions the women may have. And every 2 weeks, there will be a more in depth course held by Silvia and Dar a Luz volunteers with the aim to train local nurses to provide this service to pregnant women. Women coming to this healthcare center are impoverished and often have little education. There are a lot of first time pregnant women and a lot of adolescent pregnant women. We are grateful for the opportunity to provide some preparation for them, and looking forward to seeing the development of this program!
Great Work! I can hardly wait to be in Honduras!
